Mae Rim Lagoon

Saturday October 28
We made it out of bed at 5am, and down to the hotel foyer. It was a gorgeous hotel called Mae Rim Lagoon. It was nice and full of plants and ponds and just lovely all around. We went to the temple at 6. The monks need to eat their breakfast before 7 because they will have another meal before noon after which time they don't eat for the rest of the day. We gave the monks food that Chan's family had prepared. Then the 40 monks began to chant. It was such a beautiful, powerful, primordial sound and it sent shivers of goosbumps up my back to hear it. We all got some special "sai sin" for the wedding day.
After the temple we went back to the hotel and swam, we meet the most confident and handsome little british boy name Chris. He recited lines from AROUNG THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. After cooling off we rented bikes and rode into Mae Rim to see my FIRST Asian street market. WOW!!!!!! Now that is some fresh meat........LOL!!!
I was walking around with my eyes extremely wide open, just taking it all in, not to mention trying to figure out how many hours ago that pig was slaughtered. You know me, carnivore till the bitter end..... Jen knew how much I loved Spicy food and had me get some Tom Sum, which is this fabulous green papaya salad with peanuts, green beans, Thai Chili peppers, and straw mushrooms. IT was absolutely delicious. It was served with Morning Glory (good for the eyes they say) to help cool the taste buds after.
We then headed back to the hotel to don our Lanna style outfits for the wedding. Damn we looked HOT!!!! Once we were done getting dressed we headed up the rode to join the Grooms parade down to find Chan. The procession was led by Thai musicians, who were lead by this drummer who hit what looked like a base drum with sticks, knees, elbows and any part of his body he felt compelled to strike the drum with. What A SHOW!!!!!!!!!!! Then we hooted to signify the excitement of the day as firecrackers exploded all around and Thai women threw flower petals. The Thai's certainly know romantacism!!!!
The brides family hid Chan from the groom and once we arrived at the front of the hotel he could not pass till he paid her family. There were various points set up like this along the way. And Rick was not prepared. He had no idea, so he had to bum money off his family.
We moved inside where a village elder chanted some words of wisdom for Rick and Chan. The elder tied Rick and Chan's wrists together with sai sin and also attached a big rope to both of their heads. It was connected and I think it symbolized being mentally connected. Afterwards, all the friends and family members got to tie sai sin around them and then they were lead up to the bedroom where they presumably sealed the deal, while we waited downstairs. After they came down we were treated to Thai dancing , Fire Dancing, and the releasing of Thai Lanterns, basically minature crepe lanterns with small firepots to fuel them. We partied till around 1100 pm, then the jet lag hit us hard.
